Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja and arrived in New York to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). On arrival, he was warmly received by Nigerian officials and diplomats before proceeding to preparatory engagements. His presence underscores Nigeria’s active role in shaping global conversations on peace, security, sustainable development, and climate action.
The week-long gathering, holding from September 22 to 28, 2025, brings together world leaders, diplomats, and policymakers to deliberate on pressing global issues. As Nigeria’s representative, the Vice President will deliver the country’s national statement during the General Debates. His address is expected to highlight Nigeria’s priorities in strengthening international peace and security, promoting inclusive economic growth, and advocating for a fairer and more balanced global order.
Beyond the General Debates, Vice President Shettima will also engage in bilateral meetings with heads of state, development partners, and leaders of multilateral institutions. He is scheduled to participate in key side events on sustainable growth, humanitarian responses, and multilateral partnerships. These engagements will provide opportunities to deepen Nigeria’s alliances and expand cooperation across critical sectors.
A major highlight of Nigeria’s participation will be the unveiling of the country’s new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. By presenting these commitments at the UN Secretary-General’s special climate event, Nigeria will reinforce its dedication to addressing climate change, reducing emissions, and advancing global environmental goals.
This move aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises energy transition, green innovation, and resilience in the face of global challenges. The Vice President is currently being briefed ahead of the national statement, joined by senior members of Nigeria’s delegation. They include the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar; Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi SAN; Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar; Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji; Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole; as well as Ambassador Samson Itegboje, Charge d’Affaires at Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, and senior defence officials. Their inputs are ensuring that Nigeria’s positions are articulated with clarity, credibility, and impact.
