Senate confirms Joash Amupita as INEC Chairman

Date:

The Senate has confirmed President Bola Tinubu’s nominee, Joash Amupitan, as the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The upper chamber confirmed Amupitan after his screening on Thursday.
Amupitan, during his submission, vowed to ensure INEC’s independence.
The nominee for the chairmanship of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has told Senators that if confirmed for the position and when he takes over at the Commission, he will explore the Constitution to make the Electoral umpire truly independent.
Answering lawmakers’ questions during his screening for the position of INEC chairman at the Senate Committee of the Whone on Thursday afternoon, Amupitan said the lack of asserting INEC independence might be as a result of financial constraints on one hand and ignorance of the law on the other hand.
He, therefore, said he will explore the law to ensure that INEC truly becomes autonomous.
