Court Remands Anthony Joshua’s Driver, Adjourns Case

A 46-year-old driver, Kayode Adeniyi, who drove the ill-fated Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle conveying international boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, and his close friends, has been remanded in prison.

Joshua was on Monday, at about 11am, involved in a road crash that claimed the lives of his friends.

The vehicle, with registration number KRD 850 HN, collided with a stationary truck parked by the roadside.

The deceased were identified as Ayodele Kelvin Olu (36), a Nigerian-British citizen, and Gami Sina (36), a British citizen.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, on Friday said the driver was arraigned on a four-count charge of dangerous driving causing death, reckless driving, and negligent driving on Friday.

She said Adeniyi was also accused of driving without due care and attention, as well as driving without a valid national driver’s licence.

The defendant was granted bail in the sum of N5m with two sureties.

The police spokesperson, in a post on X, said, “The Ogun State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the Anthony Joshua accident case, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode (male), aged 46, was charged before the Sagamu Magistrate Court today, January 2, 2026, and the case has been adjourned to January 20, 2026.

“The charges read: ‘Dangerous driving causing death, contrary to Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F:135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 (as applicable in Ogun State); reckless and negligent driving, contrary to Section 6(1) of the same Act.

“Others read: ‘Driving without due care and attention, causing bodily harm and damage to property, contrary to Section 7(1) of the Act; and driving without a valid national driver’s licence, contrary to Section 10(1) of the Federal Highway Act.’”

She added that the driver was remanded pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions, while the case was adjourned till Tuesday, January 20, for trial.

The police spokesperson had, in a statement on Thursday, announced the arrest and detention of the driver.

“The driver of the Lexus SUV in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case is currently in custody. Investigations are ongoing,” the statement partly read.

Meanwhile, the Lagos and Ogun state governments on Wednesday announced the discharge of Anthony Joshua from the hospital following the tragic road accident.
