Date:

Former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London, where he was undergoing treatment for an undisclosed illness, has been laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.

The burial ceremony took place on Tuesday, July 15, 2025. The burial was scheduled for 2 p.m., but President Bola Ahmed Tinubu received the remains at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina around 1:42 pm.

The burial was conducted in accordance with Islamic traditions, with a Jana’iza (funeral prayer) held before the interment at the late president’s residence.

The major highlights of the burial ceremony include full military honours involving a 21-gun salute, which was fired as part of the state funeral, and a guard of honour comprising six officers and 96 soldiers from the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The pallbearers were a team of nine senior military officers who escorted the casket, draped with the Nigerian flag, into a waiting military hearse.

The dignitaries at the burial included President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and other high-ranking government officials. Some foreign dignitaries like the President of Guinea-Bissau and the Prime Minister of Niger were also in attendance.

President Tinubu had earlier declared a seven-day national mourning period, starting from July 13, with flags flying at half-mast across the country while
Tuesday, July 15, was declared a public holiday to honour the late president.
Condolence registers were opened in federal ministries, departments, and agencies, as well as Nigerian embassies and missions abroad, for Nigerians to pay their respects.
