Date:

Senate President Godswill Akpabio yesterday swore in four newly elected senators, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) maintaining its dominance with 88 members.

The four senators emerged at the recent bye-elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fill vacancies in the Red Chamber.

Three of them were elected on the platform of the  APC  and one on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket.

The new senators are Asogwa Ikeje Israel (APC, Enugu North), Danladi Envulu-Anza (APC, Nasarawa North), Dayo Faduyile (APC, Ondo South) and Olaka Nwogu (PDP, Rivers South-East).

With their inauguration, the composition of the Senate now stands at APC,88;  ADC, nine;  PDP, five and   Nigeria Democratic Congress  (NDC), four. The All Progressives Grand Alliance  (APGA),   Labour Party and Accord Party have one each.

While congratulating the new  Senators, Akpabio urged them to familiarise themselves with the Senate Standing Orders and parliamentary procedures to enable them to contribute effectively to debates and legislative business.

“We welcome the senators-elect who have come today to be sworn in as members of this elite club, the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Akpabio said.

The Senate President cautioned them against violating parliamentary procedures, stressing that the rules of the chamber must guide their conduct at all times.

Akpabio used the occasion to pray for the repose of former lawmakers whose deaths created some of the vacancies that necessitated the bye-elections.
